Fallout 4 by Inon Zur
Welcome to the Commonwealth!
Portal to the Past
Emerge from your Vault and enter the wastelands of Boston with this deluxe vinyl box set for Inon Zur’s Fallout 4 soundtrack. Pressed on “Vault Suit” blue by Spacelab9, this premium box set is definitely spectacular, but unfortunately not without its faults. The world of Fallout has always been a forlorn one; a look of things to come, or merely a fantastical adaptation of what could have been. Fallout has become a loving staple in the hearts of many gamers the world over, and the same is true of Mr. Zur’s work on scoring this modern reboot of a classic series.
The Vigilant
Inon Zur has cemented himself as a legend of game music score. From Dragon Age and Prince of Persia, to the front lines with Company of Heroes, Inon Zur has written some of the most iconic gaming scores ever conceived, and his work on Fallout is by no means an exception. Eclectic yet panic struck, the suites from Inon Zur truly encapsulate what an irradiated wasteland would sound like. From hopeful arrangements that promise life and peace, to hectic combative drums that put you in the heat of battle, Fallout 4’s soundtrack has all the musings one could hope for in an orchestral view of bombs not long since dropped.
Lone Wandering
This vinyl box set is truly a wonderful thing to behold. The work from Spacelab9 as well as the art direction by Bethesda should make this a centerpiece for anyone’s collection. The level of detail that went into each and every sleeve and gatefold truly allows one to feel like they’re holding a item from the game world itself. The clever use of magazine and comic covers scattered about the wasteland help bring this into a truly cohesive experience. The $125 price tag this box set carried upon release made it one tough Mentat to swallow! However, considering the sheer volume of music on display here alongside the premium design and packaging definitely made this a worthwhile purchase in my book.
While there is a lot to like here, some things are not always perfect. Some owners of this box set, including myself, have experienced unfortunate pressing issues. In one moment, your needle will be passing through an incredibly serene and moving passage — suddenly, you are thrust into the Glowing Sea, switching your turntable into a pseudo-Geiger counter and racking up rads that would make a Smoothskin topple over! While the times where the clicking occurs are not overly prevalent, nothing makes you want to reach for your RadAway more.

Unfortunately, this album was limited to 3,000 copies and has been sold out for quite a while. Hopefully, Spacelab9 will consider re-pressing this album in the future, and alleviate some of the small pressing issues present in this release. According to their newsletter, a new pressing of Fallout 3 will be coming soon, and hopefully will be followed up shortly with a re-press of Fallout 4.
